The Farmer's New Idea

I've mentioned before that we are having an extremely hot
and dry summer.
Wells are drying up, crops are dying, pastures have no
grass and temperatures have reached unprecedented highs.
The farmer had an idea.  He calls it killing two birds with
one stone.  What I call it is not printable....suffice it to say I do not
think animals should be pastured in the....
front yard.
The farmer says we are:
feeding grass to the hungry calf and donkey...
cutting the grass without using a power mower, thus being "green"....
I like being "green"...I really do....but i think this is taking our green sensibilities too far....

The One Where She Complains About The Work

About this time of year every year, I begin complaining to the farmer about the work...his work, not mine.
School is out, he, F2 and the rest are busy cutting barley and wheat, baling straw and planting beans, and with the long hours and hot temperatures it doesn't take long for things to get a bit dodgy around Farm and Fru Fru.  It is my job during this time of year to be "on hand"...translated...the farmer's beck and call-girl.  I don't mind the job, but pretty much everything else (like cooking, housework, shopping, lunch, vacations, meetings, appointments) comes to a screeching halt if I am "called".

I may be called upon to deliver lunch to a far-flung field.  I may need to drive in front of a large piece of equipment like some sort of latter-day Paul Revere shouting "the tractors are coming, the tractors are coming" while blinking my truck lights and waving my hand furiously to slow people down so they are not driven to a ditch by the oncoming farm giant.  I might just need to have meals early or late as the case may be, or pick up a part on a moments notice.  What I know is, at this time of year, when I am called, I better not say "sorry, I just fell down a flight of steps and broke my foot, I may be a little late getting that lunch to ya", or "I have the stomach flu"  if I don't want an earful.  A couple years ago, I had a bit of an accident involving a very large barn fan and my hand....don't ask...it took stupid to new heights, but a trip to the ER was called for.  After several painful hours where shots, stitches, soaks and broken bones were involved, the first thing the farmer said to me when I was finally able to leave was "what took you so long, don't you know I have a job?"  Needless to say the trip home was not pretty.
Women who live on farms will know exactly what I am talking about.  Women who don't live on farms will tut-tut while shaking their heads in disbelief.  EVERYTHING, hear me EVERYTHING revolves around the farm.  I know one farm wife who drove herself to the hospital and delivered her 4th child before her husband could get to town....straw I think.  It's a strange way of life...I would love to hear your story ...do share.  I could go on but I am being beckoned....must run...
(so lucky to have missy's pretty photos!  thanks missy)

...And the Legend of the Bucket lives......

The farmer is blessed with many friends....some stranger than others.  We returned home on Easter to find this lovely pink rabbit bucket waiting for the farmer on our front porch...

It came fully stocked with everything one could hope for in a bucket... including a "seat"............

For those who don't know, the story of the bucket was posted here sometime ago.

The legend lives on........
THE END....I hope....

Bear or Squirrel....you decide

My neighbor is a bird lover.  She feeds them year round, knows all their names (I call them red bird, blue bird, little speckled bird etc.) and frequently calls to let me know if an unusual one has been spotted in the area.  Last week my bird loving neighbor called and surprised me when she said "...hey, I think we have a bear..."  Since we live 60-70 miles from the nearest mountains, bears are extremely rare in and around Farm and Fru Fru.  In fact, I have never seen one here though several people have spotted them at one time or another in the area.  It seems my neighbor woke to find her bird feeder pulled out of the ground post and all, not once but two nights in a row, all seeds eaten!
And so it was this rather exciting news I shared with the farmer and both farm hands that night at supper.  You have to understand, when the farm hands and the farmer eat their supper, they generally do so hunched over their plates at the ready should someone try to take their food from them, grunting at best when any attempt by their wife and mother is made at pleasant family conversation.  This news, however, caused F1 to lift his head, swallow thoughtfully, and pronounce it to be impossible for  a bear to be in the area.  I proceeded to remind him of previous bear sitings, but again, he scoffed at the possibility reminding me  that last year this same neighbor had called the farmer to come over and kill a stick.   In her defense, it was a very large stick and she, thinking it moved, believed it to be a snake.  F1  then nonchalantly declared the bird seed bandit to be ................a squirrel.

He did not flinch when he said it.  He was dead serious.

Only then did both F2 and the farmer look up from their plates.  I, watching to see if even a hint of  a smile crossed his face, realized that F1 had gone back to his meal, oblivious to the fact that the rest of us were waiting for the reasoning behind this strange announcement.

"What?????!!!!!"  I asked.  "Let me get this straight........You think a little 1 pound, bushy tail squirrel  yanked a wooden post and feeder out of the ground,  flung it into the yard, and then ate all the seeds????......."

"Well" he said mid-chew, "it was probably a couple of squirrels, maybe a possum too..."

"Ok", I countered, "so you're telling me, you can't see a black bear wandering down here from the backwoods somewhere,  hungry after a long winter's nap,  but you can see a team of GIANT squirrels working in tandem with a possum, pulling a fence post out of the dirt and throwing it down not once but twice??!!"

"Yeah, pretty much" he replied,........ and then went back to eating.

I realized then that this unusual burst of family conversation had worn itself out, as everyone else went back to their food, their chewing and their plate hunching.

am going on record though, when I say that if I have a choice between seeing one hungry little black bear or a team of GIANT squirrels, I will take the bear everytime.........................................

**We never did find the culprit...some things are just meant to remain a mystery**

Spring....in all it's glory

Over the weekend, Spring sprung here at Farm and Fru Fru...these daffodils are now in bloom...

We are getting lots of hen fruit...

The ladies have come out for some extra pecking time in the dirt...

and the farmer says the cows are "fighting" which means spring is really here...(even though this picture was taken last fall...)

and then there's this....the REAL beauty of the farm....the remains of the silage bags that have now been emptied after months of feeding hungry cows...ready to be recycled....when the farmer has time to haul them to the plastic recycle bins at the dump.....

in the mean time....they wait........out in the open......for all to see........bundled, tied and piled up......not quite as pretty as the daffodils, huh.......?

Three on Thursday....

Oh how I love a clever idea!  I was visiting Todays Creative Blog on March 17 that you can view here
and there was this very very fun chicken wire cloche.  Don't you think everyone needs one?  How fun would it be to have this on your table for Easter or just for spring protecting a pretty little moss covered dish of posies?

Next Up...it's Chick's Picks time!  Chick's Picks is a fun site belonging to Hillary Tattersall who has an online store and also hosts Chick's Picks shows every few weeks.   Visit her site and take a look at Upcoming Events for info on her show which begins today in Northern Virginia.  Farm and Fru Fru will be there for the first time and we are VERY excited to be invited!  If you can't make the show, you will want to take a look at her store.

Lastly, my friend Susan lives in New Castle Upon Tyne in England and sent me the most beautiful note card the other day I thought you might like to see.  I wish I had a better picture because the colors are so vivid and pretty...Susan always writes on the best note cards and this one in particular is a keeper!  Have a great day...

The Bucket...The Indelicacy lives on.....

I warned her.  She is the kindest and gentlest of people, and I told my sister-in-law if she married my brother all those years ago, she ran the risk of becomming just like him.  That time has come.  Upon hearing the story of the farmer and his bucket (See here) s-i-l went on line and found this image,  and immediately put her vast creative skills to work painting this bucket.  She gifted it to the farmer for his birthday along with an equally interesting card.  She and my brother threw in a gift card for good measure to a favorite eatery....does she REALLY think that makes up for THIS????

I think not.  She was warned.  She chose not to heed my advice and this is what she has come to.

Needn't think the farmer viewed this as ONLY a joke...oh no...not the farmer.  He would not DREAM of wasting a bucket....It WILL be used.

I live with sick people....

Weekend Roundup...

The farmer had a birthday over the weekend.  I say "had" rather than "celebrated" on purpose.  The farmer is not a "celebration" kinda guy.  I knew that when I married him and yet, somehow, I have always thought if I did just the right thing, bought just the right gift, baked just the right cake, he would miraculously turn into a "celebration kinda guy".  Once again, my hopes were dashed.

I think people are either celebration people or non-celebration people.  I come from a long line of celebrators.  We celebrate anything.  We love material offerings.  We will go out for a celebratory meal at the drop of a hat.   I remember one time when I was a child,my grandmother, the original celebrator, came running out the front door purse in hand  and jumped into our car where my mother, father, brother and I were waiting. We were a good half mile down the road before she realized we were NOT going out to eat, we were NOT celebrating a forgotten birthday or anything else but were in fact just going to ride up the highway so that we could see the odometer on my fathers l964 Chevy Impala turn over to 100,000 miles.  Nonplussed, she decided that was better than sitting at home and joined in the odometer celebration.

The farmer on the other hand comes from a long line on non-celebrationists.  His mother baked him a cake for his birthday and some years he got a gift.  That was it.  His father (the original farmer) never received a gift without saying "that's nice, what am I supposed to do with it?"  They were not celebrators.  PLEASE don't get me wrong.  Both the farmer's parents were the best people and VERY best inlaws that were ever placed on this Earth...celebrators, however, they were not.  Both farmhands have taken after their father.  I am the lone celebrator in a sea of non-celebrators.

The farmer is content.  He wants nothing.  Nothing.  It's a wonderful way to go through life but it makes gift-buying a real bip.   And so it was in this atmosphere that the farmer "celebrated" his 54th birthday....it came... we dined out, ate cake and opened gifts..... and it went.  And though he didn't say it, I know he was thinking ..."what am I supposed to do with this?..."

I posted the above photo of my Easter tree...I LIKE to celebrate.....my Easter tree is up...I am ready...bring on the celebration.
