Today, I have the pleasure of recommending not one but TWO picture books
by Donna McDine, Guardian Angel Publishing. These are picture books in that they have wonderful
illustrations, but are recommended for ages 8-12, so they have more text than traditional picture books.
In both cases, Donna has written thoughtful books that will encourage reluctant readers to WANT to read. Powder Monkey tells the story of a young boy taken against his will and pressed into service on board a ship by the Royal Navy press gang. It's not a happy-go-lucky tale, but is a page turner that boys especially will love.
The second of her books, Hockey Agony, tells the story of Larry, who, with a broken leg, is unable to play a big game and instead must keep score. Larry grapples with a tough choice.
Both these books have valuable lessons hidden within these excellent stories and make for excellent
reads. I encourage you to check out both these books this holiday season.
Donna is a wonderful writer who obviously knows what children enjoy reading. These books
would made excellent Christmas treats! Both books are available at AMAZON, and
I highly recommend them!
Hoping you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
