10 Random Things... About Chickens

In my sometimes misguided attempts to educate "city folks" about farm-living, I am today going to
tell you 10 random things about chickens.
I know you want to know...go on, admit it...besides, it's very trendy right now to "keep chickens" and this blog does endeavor to be trendy (not that I would know trendy, even if it jumped up and bit me).

Even so, here are some interesting chicken facts:

1.  The average hen lays 300 eggs each year.
2.  The record for multiple egg yolks in one egg is nine.  (three for us)
3.  A hen must eat about 4 pounds of feed to produce 1 dozen eggs.
4.  A chicken will lay fewer but larger eggs as it grows older

5.  The largest recorded chicken egg weighed 9 ounces and had two yolks. (ouch)
6.  The record for egg laying belongs to a leghorn that laid 371 eggs in 264 days.
7.  The record for most eggs laid in one day by a single chicken is 7.
8.  Americans eat 80 pounds of chicken per capita per year.

9.  Chickens can run 9 miles per hour.
10.  There are currently more chickens on earth than humans.

And that friends, is your lesson for today.

  5. Interesting indeed. Thank you!
Keeping chicken is en vogue in Germany, too. We got chickens over a year ago (after 20 years of abstinence, so my parents still knew the basics)and I have to admit I thought chicken were cute but kind of dumb and just good for the eggs. I have got a totally different opinion now. Each has a unique character, they answer to their names and they are very sensible. (I even post stuff about them on my blog, like a mother posts baby pics and stories... who would have thought...)Now that I know that, I cannot bear to think about those chicken factories, so I hope more country and city people discover how amazing those birds are.
